Mike Fisher, former captain of the Nashville Predators, has been named the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame’s Professional Athlete of the Year.
Earlier this week, former Predators captain Mike Fisher was recognized by the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. The 18 year NHLer received the organization’s award for professional athlete of the year. Fisher, who played 7 seasons in Nashville www.nashvillepredsfans.com/austin-watson-jersey-c-12.html /a>, retired after last season’s Stanley Cup loss. He served as captain of the Nashville Predators for one year.
The Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame promotes the idea that sports encourage “the virtues of competition, fair play, friendship, solidarity, mutual understanding and respect for human dignity”. All things that Mike Fisher exemplified over his 18 year career. On June 16th, Fisher will receive his award at the foundation’s annual induction banquet.
Career Overview
Over his 18 NHL seasons, Fisher played in 1088 games, scored 276 goals, and had 309 assists. In his 7 seasons in Nashville, the center played 413 games, and tallied 109 goals and 128 assists.
Last season, his 18 goals and 24 assists helped the Predators win their first ever Western Conference championship. They later fell just two games short of the Stanley Cup, with a Game 6 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
During the 2010 2011 NHL season, the Ottawa Senators traded Fisher to Nashville, the city where his wife, Carrie Underwood works and lives. Since then, Fisher has developed a strong relationship with the city of Nashville www.nashvillepredsfans.com/craig-smith-jersey-c-13.html /a>, and non profits across the Middle Tennessee area.
He worked closely with Room in the Inn, the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, Cottage Cove Urban Ministries Anthony Bitetto Jersey, and Habitat for Humanity, to name a few.
In 2011, Fisher donated 55,000 to Cottage Cover Urban Ministries, for the purchase of a van www.nashvillepredsfans.com/colton-sissons-jersey-c-14.html /a>, and the renovations for their music room.
After the 2011 2012 season, 25,000 was donated to Room in the Inn by the NHL, on Fisher’s behalf, after he won the NHL Foundation Player Award.
Fisher is the first former Nashville Predator to receive the award, and to be inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame.
Fisher is as deserving a recipient as anyone this year. He changed Nashville when he arrived in 2011, and still continues to even after retirement. Who knows though, maybe the former captain hasn’t hung up the skates for good. Maybe another playoff run for the ol’ captain? That’d be a fun fantasy
