Fans criticized GGG's focus on Path of exile currency releasing a unique league for both hardcore and softcore players. The developers took this feedback and focused their resources on a much larger league for both groups of players called Talisman.
And it is the worst league Grinding Gear Games have ever designed. Enemies could possess talismans that granted them powerful properties. Slaying them would grant you a talisman, which is effectively a corrupt amulet with unique implicit modifiers. The issue was the most powerful talismans and new Uniques were tied behind tiers that took literal thousands of talismans to unlock, forcing players to make dedicated stash tabs to store them. Meta-progression was so terrible this league that most simply ignored the mechanic or stopped playing entirely. There wasn't a parallel league running to save players this time.
