League of Legends cast a magic over this year's GDC Online Awards.
As a myriad of games were awarded the creators of online games seemed to be enthralled with Riot Games' League of Legends. The no-cost hybrid of game-playing and strategy in real-time won five awards on the evening which included the top prize in the Best New Online Game category. The game even took home an Audience Award, narrowly edging over Wizard101 by Austin-based Kingsisle entertainment. The only category for which League of Legends was nominated but did not win the award was Best Live Game, an honour won from EVE Online at the expense of other highly-publicized competitors such as World of Warcraft and Farmville.When League of Legends dominated the awards, it also had to compete with two pioneers of the internet. One of them game was Ultima Online, which was chosen as the first to be inducted to the GDC Online Awards Hall of Fame. The original Ultima Online developers Rich Bogel, Starr Long, and Raph Koster attended to celebrate the occasion with each of them delivering some words of appreciation and appreciation to all the players and developers that have played the game in the past 14 years.
"I recall bringing my infant daughter to the office with a baby carriage to play," Koster said. "She's an adult now, and isn't interested in talking about me."
Long thanked the former Electronic Arts CEO Larry Probst for signing a grant agreement of $100.000 on napkins to start the project and also to the player who killed his Lord British character during the game's initial phase and made clear who was the boss.
Another pioneer to be honored included the Dr. Richard A. Bartle who was awarded the Online Game Legend Award. One of the first creators of the hugely multiplayer online game MUD (multi-user Dungeon), Bartle said he was thrilled, humbled at buy WoTLK Gold, humbled, and amazed to be awarded the prize.
