It's very cheap, carries very pleasant defenses in magic, ranged and melee, and also doesn't reduce an opportunity of this melee-user hitting hard. That is right; black d'hide has no negative bonus towards melee attack bonuses. No wonder it is so popular. (NOTE: Karil's armor set also carries similar characteristics and the highest magical defense in the game.
