The Schaefers remember piecing the game back together from documents developers had taken house and Diablo Gold successfully finished the match, but with a lot of its development files missing. "We dropped a lot of the resources, art assets," stated Erich Schaefer. "It'd make it quite hard for Blizzard to perform a Diablo 2 remaster because all the resources we used are pretty much gone. They'd have to make them from scratch."
That's exactly what Blizzard did Diablo 2: Resurrected, also according to Diablo direct Rod Fergusson and principal designer Rob Gallerani, the code and strength loss wasn't really as awful as the Schaefers remembered. "He went into people's desks only like,'Hey, do you have anything left ?' Not only did we get the codebase, but we have a lot of the first assets. When you find the video of Tyrael's wings in HD, they actually would be the first model from the first Tyrael's wings. I believe that's one of the few assets that we just took "
Gallerani said they had other resources pulled from a variety of sources. For example: 3D models of the Lut Gholein market stalls used for marketing stills. From the first Diablo 2 those were turned to 2D sprites, however, Blizzard was able to recoup the 3D files. "Yes, data losses occur," Gallerani said. "I was not there just to understand exactly what things disappeared. But we have the code. I mean, the game gets patched, right, even after all the years."
Blizzard rounded up all of that material before it began work on Diablo 2: Resurrected, but the original art assets really weren't vital because they remade"every single asset in the game," Fergusson said. Resurrected enables you to switch between the classic graphics, which can be untouched, and an entirely new 3D engine. The cutscenes have been completely remade also.
"We went with,'What would their aim be if they had the instruments we have now?'" The code, more than the original art assets, was vital for Buy Diablo 2 Resurrected Items, and that thankfully was not lost.
