The character slot thing's far from my favourite thing they have done

No, but I have never played with another game that made alts to remake as meseta pso2 this particular one.
Or that had weeklies that got better the further alts you can take through them by letting you pool all the benefits in an account level.
I also played the JP version back when all extra character slots needed to be purchased (and were deletable), so that may be coloring my impressions a bit.
The character slot thing's far from my favourite thing they have done, but it is certainly not EA-tier shitty when you look at the context of what it is that they let you perform using the totally free slots that they do provide you. The one thing which gets close to shitty is Brand New Finds.
Most games would either only give you the level 30 Mag meals once or just let you get credit for a weekly per account. I've played games where people were literally called"economic terrorists" by community managers for less than that which PSO2 allows you to do infinitely with your free personality slots.
New Genesis was always likely to become a international release on account of the value they found in additional Western MMOs like Final Fantasy and even games like Monster Hunter.
The gambling industry was very different eight years back, which was a huge element in why they chose to keep PSO2 JP-only. Eight years ago you had anime such as Bleach, Dragon Ball, and Naruto, but not one of the stream anime ever took away.
Anime has had this huge mega-boom, and they knew making New Genesis a global release would literally print cash. However, how can you do so, and have each one the buy pso2 meseta xbox cosmetics/weapons/mags carry over so that you don't lose players who spent a metric-fuck-ton of cash in your present IP? Easy. You create your present a release that is global too.
