Why U4GM Recommends Minions in Diablo 4

The Minion Necromancer wins Season 14 by making ordinary Diablo 4 combat feel manageable instead of frantic. Your skeletons occupy enemies, shadow mages keep pressure on targets, and the golem gives you room to cast, reposition, and collect Corpses. That extra breathing space is worth more than flashy burst during the early grind, especially while your loot is changing every few minutes and your budget for D4 Gold is limited.

Why Minions Work So Well

The build asks you to solve fewer problems at once. Your army handles much of the frontline contact, while you focus on curses, corpse skills, and survival tools. Decrepify slows the pace of dangerous groups and helps reduce incoming pressure, while Corpse Explosion or another corpse-based option gives you useful damage after the first enemies fall.

That doesn't mean you can stand still and ignore every attack. Strong elites and bosses still punish poor positioning, and summons can lose time switching targets. Keep moving around the edge of a fight, use the golem's active ability to pull attention toward a priority target, and let your warriors pin enemies down before you spend resources on cleanup.

The Early Skill Plan

Spend your first points on summon damage and durability, then add one dependable curse and a defensive escape. Blood Mist is especially valuable when a boss telegraphs a heavy attack or a crowded room closes around you. Army of the Dead can provide a useful burst, but it shouldn't delay the upgrades that keep your permanent summons alive.

Upgrade Skeleton Warrior and Skeleton Mage support before chasing side damage.
Use Decrepify when enemy groups begin reaching you too often.
Keep a corpse skill available so your damage doesn't collapse after the first wave.
Save Blood Mist for dangerous mechanics instead of pressing it on cooldown.
Use the golem active ability on elites, bosses, or tightly packed priority targets.

Book of the Dead Choices

Reaper-style warriors are a sensible leveling pick because they give the army a sturdy melee base with respectable damage. Shadow mages add ranged Darkness pressure and fit the build's overall direction. The golem is your anchor; its value comes from buying time for the rest of the army, not merely adding another health bar.

Gear That Actually Matters

Don't wait for a unique item before starting this build. Intelligence, maximum Life, Armor, All Resistance, Movement Speed, and ranks for your summon skills are useful targets on ordinary legendary gear. Minion damage, Darkness damage, critical strike chance, and critical strike damage become more appealing as your character gains better supporting pieces.

Situation Best Priority Reason
Fresh leveling gear Intelligence, Life, skill ranks Reliable power with little setup
Summons die often Defensive stats and summon durability Keeps your damage active
Bosses feel slow Minion damage and focused golem bonuses Improves priority-target pressure
After level 50 Deadraiser, Warrior, and Mage glyphs Strengthens the army directly

The Mistake Most Players Make

Many players swap into a Golem-centered setup too early because a tier list ranks it higher for endgame content. That can leave the character feeling weaker: the army's safety disappears before the golem has enough equipment support to carry bosses alone. From what I've seen, the better checkpoint is practical rather than tied to one level. Move over only after your defenses are stable, your summon bonuses are in place, and your golem can reliably hold priority targets.

From Level 50 Into Endgame

After level 50, start Paragon with glyphs that reinforce the damage sources already doing the work. Deadraiser, Warrior, and Mage are natural early choices, while Essence and Control can make more sense later when your gear supports their interactions. Season 14's weaker Dominate Glyph also makes it less attractive to force an Overpower plan onto a Minion character that already has a clear identity.

Minions remain the sensible Season 14 starting point for new and returning Diablo 4 players: they level smoothly, function without a rare centerpiece, and teach useful Necromancer habits before the harder endgame grind begins. Keep the army active, upgrade the pieces that solve your current problem, and spend your first cheap D4 items budget on clear power improvements instead of chasing a perfect loadout that may never drop.
