U4GM Explains POE 2 Duelist Swords and December 11 Launch

26 Aug 2026 in 09:12am
Path of Exile 2 is taking a much bigger step towards its full release than many players expected. Grinding Gear Games has confirmed that the Duelist class and swords will arrive with version 1.0 on December 11, 2026, alongside Acts 5 and 6. That date matters because it is not just another Early Access update. It marks the point where the main campaign is due to be complete, while the game also gains new bosses, enemies, skills and equipment. If you are already thinking about your first character, keeping some POE 2 Currency ready could save you a lot of trouble when the new systems go live. You will probably want room to test ideas instead of committing every useful resource to one build before the details settle.

A Duelist Built Around Choice

The Duelist reveal gives the class a clear identity, but it does not lock players into one narrow style. The footage shows dual-wielding, sword parries, physical strikes, lightning attacks and Cyclone. That is a fairly wide toolkit for a class arriving with the full release. You might build around fast attacks and mobility, lean into defensive timing with a buckler, or use blood effects to turn close combat into a more aggressive game of risk and reward.

GGG has also confirmed that the class is called Duelist, rather than Gladiator. Gladiator could still appear later as an Ascendancy choice, although the complete Ascendancy lineup has not been explained yet. That missing information is important. A skill can look impressive in a trailer and feel very different once passive bonuses, support gems and item requirements enter the picture. For now, the Duelist looks like a class with several directions rather than a finished template that everyone is expected to copy.

Swords Are More Than a New Damage Type

The most interesting part of the announcement may be the way swords interact with skills. The revealed abilities cover physical damage, bleeding, lightning, chaos and channelled attacks. That spread suggests that sword builds will not all play the same way. One character could focus on heavy hits and bleed, while another darts through packs with lightning-powered attacks. You may even be able to change how a skill behaves by switching between one sword, two swords, or a sword and buckler.

Bloodied Blade is a good example of this approach. Its effect appears to change according to the weapon setup, which makes equipment choice feel more meaningful than a simple increase to attack power. Charged Slash, Rending Dash and Perforate add more options, with each one seeming to fill a different role. The possible return of Agnar, Count Geonor's sword, is also worth watching. If the unique weapon grants its own skill, specialised items could shape a build's playstyle instead of merely filling a stat slot.

Cyclone, Thrax and the Wider Release

Cyclone is likely to draw the most attention from returning players. The spinning attack is instantly recognisable, yet its presentation in Path of Exile 2 gives it a different feel. The trailer appears to show a standard version and a blood-focused variation, though the exact requirements have not been confirmed. Players who enjoyed Cyclone in the original game will be watching the numbers closely. Small changes to movement, resource costs or support options could make the new version feel completely different.

The wider launch has plenty more to offer. Thrax, the Cyclops of Tarth, is one of the newly shown bosses, and his large arena suggests a fight built around movement and positioning. Goatmen are returning as well, giving long-time players a familiar enemy group in a new setting. Acts 5 and 6 will complete the planned campaign, bringing new story beats, areas, monsters and equipment. It should feel like a proper new chapter, not simply a class patch added to the existing game.

Build Planning Before 1.0

Swords will not belong only to the Duelist. Path of Exile 2 allows classes to use a broad range of weapons, so a sword setup could work with characters such as Titan, Chronomancer, Shaman or Oracle. That opens the door to unusual combinations. A class with strong defensive passives might make a slow sword build safer, while a spell-focused character could use a sword to support a hybrid setup. You will quickly find that the most popular option may not be the most interesting one.

Preparation is best kept practical. Hold onto flexible equipment, useful crafting materials and currency that can serve more than one idea. There is no need to fill every slot with items for a build that has not been tested in the live environment. Skill values, passive interactions and Ascendancy bonuses may change before release, and the early market will probably move quickly as players discover which sword combinations actually work.

Final Thoughts

The Duelist and sword system could give Path of Exile 2 a fresh melee identity at the exact moment the game reaches version 1.0. Dual-wielding, parries, Cyclone, blood effects and lightning attacks offer plenty of variety, while cross-class weapon use should keep theorycrafting open. Add the completed campaign, Thrax, returning Goatmen and a new set of equipment, and December 11 looks like a major turning point. Keeping Path of Exile 2 Currency Orbs available for testing, crafting and trading will let you respond to the new environment with less pressure when the first sword builds begin to take shape.
