Super Bowl Legend to Have His Jersey Retired!

On Thursday, the Washington D.C. commander announced that the team will officially retire the #44 nfl jersey of legendary Hall of Famer running back John Riggins during Week 9 of the 2026 season against the Rams.
Riggins is one of the most important players in Washington D.C. history. The soon-to-be 77-year-old legendary running back was the 6th overall pick in the 1971 NBA draft. He joined the Washington Redskins in the 1976 season, beginning his true career peak. In the 1982 season, Riggins rushed for 610 yards in four playoff games. In that year's Super Bowl, he rushed for 166 yards on 38 runs, helping Washington win their first Super Bowl and earning the Super Bowl MVP award.
During Riggins' 14-year career, he accumulated 11,352 regular season rushing yards, 7,472 of which were in Washington D.C. In 1992, Riggins was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. The team commander retired his Washington Commanders jerseys, making him the seventh player in the team's history to receive this honor.
